I’m going to tell you something that you’re not going to believe because most fisherman stretch the truth on how big the fish was or fib where they caught the fish. But, this is no fish tale; we have been crushing the snook the past two weeks. We are catching 20 to 40 fish a trip depending upon how many anglers are on the trip, and the size of snook are ranging from 19” to 24” with one to two fish on each trip over 30”. This is the time of year to book a trip to Tampa and catch Snook and Redfish. On my last trip we boated many snook over 25” and lost a couple of really big fish in the mangroves, but we did manage to get one out that measured right at 31.5 inches and that made Matt from Ohio very happy. We also hooked into some really nice redfish with the biggest right around 35”, which made Katie pretty happy even though her arms were sore from reeling in this monster bull redfish.
Let’s switch gears a minute and talk Sheepshead. Yep, they are biting, and they are big. I’ve only been out once hitting the reefs for them as my clients have wanted snook and reds, but the sheepshead are definitely biting, and they are very good eating.
The sheepshead bite should continue strong for a few more weeks, so if you’re looking to have a nice mess of meat for the family, sheepies are the ticket. Next on the Tampa Bay Fishing Charter Menu is Trout, and they too have been biting and they too have been running big.
It’s been the spring of big fish in 2019 and I’m not complaining at all. I can’t give up my secrets on where I’m catching them, but I can tell you to watch the tides. Moving water is key and the right depths of water, but the main key is tide and the right time of the tide. This great Tampa Bay bite should stay strong over the 8 to 10 weeks; then the snook will start to migrate out to the gulf for their annual spawn in late May and June.
But right now, if you’re going to be in the Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, or Tarpon Springs area and are looking for a professional light tackle, shallow water, rod bending, drag screaming good time hooking Snook, redfish, trout or even sheepshead, then give me a ring and we’ll get you on the Triton and have a great day on the water!
